Illustration Friday: Beginner (Sketch)

Ok… I know what you are thinking.
What does this little guy have to do with the word “Beginner”!?!

Well… I promise I AM going somewhere with the concept. I just haven’t gotten far enough into it for it to make any sense (anywhere but in my own imagination). Once I add in a couple more characters, an interesting setting and a few random objects you will understand. I PROMISE…

In the meantime… enjoy the sketch. I’d love to hear your feedback… or even your ideas about what he is going to “learn to do”!

Poor bunny! It doesn’t look happy with this stage of the story, but maybe it ends up being a fire-breathing bunny? 🙂

Yes, it looks to me like he is about to get a lesson in “fire breathing”, and he doesn’t think he could do such a thing, but bunny is worried…

    Very cute!

Poor rabbit – he doesn’t seem to appreciate the joke! Really great expressions!

Andi, I’m a fellow MO SCBWI writer/ilustrator who came over to visit your blog from a browse of the region members. I love your work, particularly your settings and your (prismacolor?) handling. About the giraffe and puppet: I didn’t notice what was going on there, because my eye goes to the gentleman (zookeeper?) first and mostly stays there. It was only reading the text that I knew I’d missed something- the idea sounded great to me- but it doesn’t come through as the theme of the piece. I’d love to be able to handle my mediums as well as you do!
So what about June/July? Please don’t stop posting! What an ambitious goal you set for yourself! I have set similar goals and quit when life grew monstrous. Hey, if needed, adjust the pace of your posted work, but please continue! It is so fun to see, and it looks to me that you aren’t really very far away from the success you want!
    Hoping for more!

Thanks so much Heather! I appreciate the advice as well as the compliments. I have done a bit more work on that piece… maybe I will finish it and post it up this week. With the background in I think it really helps.

I really need to get my head back in the game. I actually live in Webb City, about 5 minutes north of the tornado that hit Joplin. Many of my friends lost everything and the past two months have been filled with volunteer work, event planning, and supporting them in getting back on their feet. It has been an emotional roller coaster and I am just now getting back to a place where I can feel somewhat creative when it comes to my illustration. I have been making jewelry which I am selling on an Etsy shop to raise money for Joplin relief too… which has taken much of my time. (

I am registered to attend the OWAIC Conference in two weeks so I plan to work on some more illustrations next week to be prepared for that. ( if you hadn’t heard about it yet). I feel like I was so close to where I wanted to be before all of this happened. Just need to get back on track again.

Thanks for the encouragement… just what I needed!
