Our friends said we’re a silly pair,
with my big, round butt and your poufy hair.
But, we found the rhythm and together we twirled,
as we began our dance around the world.

I had every intention of letting Susanna Leonard Hill’s Valentines Day Contest be the impetus I needed to finish this picture book manuscript. It has been bumping around in my head for some time. Her contest challenge was to write a story on “unlikely Valentines” in under 200 words. Well… it doesn’t get much more unlikely than this I would say…

Obviously my entry is incomplete, but I just had to share it for the sake of entertainment. Unfortunately, a work project got in the way this weekend and I was unable to give this story the time that it deserves. I will continue working on it over the next few months and will keep everyone updated on my progress though!

I just LOVE my IPad2 (which I won in an online contest last year). My son loves it as much as any other kid, but lately he’s been wanting to download more and more games and books for it. This can get pretty pricey. I try to negotiate with my son but it’s so difficult to tell him no when he starts handing me his pretend money and asking me to “Say Yes Mamma” with those big blue eyes.

Searching through some of the free apps today, I came across one called Crayola “Lights, Camera, Color!” … and I just HAD to share.

The app allows you to take a picture or select one from your gallery. It then “vacuums” out all the color from the image. Once in its “frame” you get to add “stickers” and color it using virtual Crayola crayons, pencils and markers. The free version was fun enough, but I quickly learned that you could purchase 90 additional “stickers” for $1.99 (Those app builders know how to hook you don’t they!?!). We were having so much fun that I made the splurge. Probably my biggest negative is that you can’t reopen the images and color them once you close them… at least I haven’t figured out a way to yet.

The two images above were collaborate works that I created with (and of) my two-year old son. We had a blast! I love the construction/race car driver/nerd duck the best… but unfortunately Collin wouldn’t let me finish coloring it in his excitement. Soooo much fun… and a great creativity starter for all ages!

Unfortunately, I didn’t take an photos at the sessions last week. Probably because I was too busy taking notes or flapping my gums. I think these photos sum up the weekend nicely though. New York… wow. I get it now.

For the past week, I have been literally CHEWING on all the wonderful information that was thrown at me during the SCBWI conference in New York City. I was expecting a great event, but I had no idea how inspiring it would truly be.

Towards the end of the conference the common question among attendees was “What was your favorite part?” I would have to say that it is difficult to put into words. Mainly, I was amazed by how many of my peers were having lightbulb moments of inspiration. They happened during sessions, over dinner conversation, while taking breaks and late at night in the hotel bar. You could always tell when it happened… the person would stop, grab their pencil and feverishly begin taking notes or sketching. I personally worked through a problem I was having with a manuscript during one session. I came up with two new picture book ideas. Another friend wrote an entire picture book draft in the midst of a keynote.

I think one of the greatest gifts when attending an SCBWI conference is allowing yourself to forget your daily life and immerse yourself in your passion. The second gift is that you are able to do so surrounded by like-minded people. These people don’t bat an eyelash when you begin discussing treasure ships, talking chickens and “Robo-vampires set on destroying the earth” (Yes… for those who didn’t attend, this was an actual topic of discussion on one of the panels). They share in your enthusiasm when you talk about your new Wacom tablet, your trials and tribulations with XYZ printing company, and your frustrations about working while a toddler hangs off your arm begging for more apple juice. It’s just nice to know that we aren’t alone.

Overall, I feel envigorated, renewed and full of direction. MUCH more so than when I packed my bags and headed to the airport a week ago.

Obviously you can’t discount the experience of rubbing elbows and absorbing the advice of “the greats” in the business either. It amazed me how willingly people like Jane Yolen, Peter Brown, John Rocco, Cassandra Clare, Sophie Blackall, etc. were to share their knowledge and experience with those just getting started. They had a certain way of making you feel “invited to the party”… and party we did! The gala’s and socials were incredible and I met several people who I believe will be lifelong friends. Building a network is so important in this business (as many of the speakers agreed) and I feel great knowing that my own group of peers is growing with each new event.

Many of you are probably wondering about all the “secrets and insider tips” we learned at the conference. Those that will help us to soar above the rest and land those coveted contracts. Most of all I learned that even the “professionals” are still stumbling along trying to find their way with each change in the market. It’s reassuring to know that they don’t have all the answers either.

Despite this, many of them did have a lot of great advice. Many of their words of advice were simply reminders to keep pushing forward. Here are some of the thoughts that stood out to me:

Be visible. Blog once a week. Comment on other people’s blogs… generally they will return the favor. Join Facebook and try to be interesting. Show the publishing industry that you are relevant. Just put your work out there. Key word: Discoverability.

Do what you know and create what you love. If you are passionate about what you are doing it will shine through in your work.

Give freely. Be generous and open. More ideas will come. Be an idea factory.

Tell the truth in your character’s own language. The truth that you know is the one that will get you published. Look within, be honest and create from the heart.

Read. If you want to be a creator of stories you have to know a lot about the world… and how to ask the right questions.

Have style. Your own style has a relationship to your childhood and your own relationship with books. Don’t follow trends, do what comes naturally. Move from conscious creation to a more intuitive approach.

Know your characters. The story of your book is found in whatever they NEED!

Live a creative life. All the parts of your life inform one another. Even making cupcakes for your kids can feed your work.

Stay strong. Success is directly proportional to your ability to accept rejection.

Network. Connect with people who embrace your work.

There was a lot of other discussion about websites to check out, the current status of the industry, suggestions for submission, marketing recommendations and more. I can’t even begin to go into all of those things just yet, but in the end those things are probably the least important. It all begins and ends with doing good work. I truly believe that if you have a good story, if you tell it well, if you create it with passion, and if you pursue its publication with a strong belief in its success… it will find an audience. I have to believe that. This belief has lit a fire under me this week and I look forward to seeing where it takes me over the next few months.

Finally, I will leave you with the book trailer that John Rocco created for his book “Blackout”. Discussions on book trailers and marketing were a huge part of the conference and I was incredibly inspired by the passion behind this one. It doesn’t always have to be complicated. Sometimes simple can be wonderful.

I need new postcards and prints for my trip to New York this week, so I only have one more day to work on this before everything gets sent to the printer. I’m going to tuck myself away in a corner at Panera tomorrow… I’ll need plenty of coffee and some good music… but it will get done.

As you know from my previous post, I ordered and received my first Wacom tablet in the mail this week. I’ve only been using it for a few days but I am head over heels in LOVE!

Check out my “first” illustration in progress:

I’ve been working in Photoshop since (*cough*) 1997… and have even been teaching seminars and workshops on the program for the past few years. Knowing that, it is just plain ridiculous that I haven’t bought a tablet before now. RIDICULOUS! When I got it, I was expecting the normal 3-4 month adjustment period people claim that it takes to get used to using the thing… but oddly enough it fits like an old cozy glove.

To get a better feel for how to get started, I went ahead and bought/watched Will Terry’s first Digital Painting in Photoshop course.

I was expecting to pick up a few tips here and there… but I ended up watching all three hours in total amazement… taking notes feverishly the entire time. He is a MASTER at color. And, believe it or not, he does his illustrations using only about 2-3 tools in Photoshop. That’s it. He advocates becoming an illustrator in traditional media and then finding a way to create the same technique digitally (Props to traditionalists!). When you look at his previous acrylic work alongside his newer digital work you literally can’t tell one from another. It’s a beautiful thing in a world so smothered in digital art and it convinced me that it just might be the “medium” I’ve been searching for.

As soon as I got an hour or two into painting my illustration I was sold. I’ve been searching for a way to get the detail I need and want, without losing the raw beauty of the texture you see in traditional paintings. By adapting Will’s methods to suit my own style, I think I may have turned a really incredible corner with my technique and who I am as an illustrator.

I’ve still got a long way to go on this piece. The process for this technique is very slow and quiet. It is amazing to me how much it feels like when I work in colored pencil. However, it will be much easier to make corrections when I need to make changes. AND, I can get much richer color and incredible detail without worrying about the piece becoming muddy… something I’ve struggled with.

The Gods are beginning to take shape and I love all the “special moments” that are just starting to form in this illustration. I can’t wait to get back to work and finish this one… so I can move on to the next. It’s going to be a beautiful year… and I don’t think I’ll struggle trying to enjoy the process like I was before.

I feel incredibly inspired!

This week I wrote my first draft of my first picture book manuscript. I am now ready to start the grueling process of revisions, so it isn’t quite ready to share just yet. I have really fallen in love with the characters so I decided to go ahead and illustrate one of the spreads. I’ve been working feverishly on it, and hope to finish it in time to get new promo cards made up before the SCBWI winter conference in New York next week. So far I’m really excited with where it is going!

Will start adding color tomorrow with this…

Yep! It’s gonna be a fun Wednesday with my new Wacom tablet and a couple of really cool Japanese Gods.
And I have to say… I really like where this one is headed.

People often ask me where my ideas come from and usually the answer is a difficult one to answer. I tend to daydream in images and often something as simple as a word will spark an entire scene in my mind. This comes partially from the intense brainstorming sessions I was forced to endure in art school. They taught me never to settle in with the first idea I have… but to push myself to think of all the directions I can take my interepretations.

As I have been working on my portfolio over the past year, the characters I’ve drawn have begun to come to life in my mind. In my studio, I began to imagine where each one came from, how they had reached the moment I was depicting, and where they would go next. Nobody knows their silly stories but me. However, having attended several conferences over the past year I’m beginning to think that their stories SHOULD be told. Maybe I could write AND illustrate… how great would THAT be?!?

I’ve decided to jump in with both feet and participate in the Second Annual Kidlitart #PBDummy Challenge. The worst case scenario would be a complete picture book dummy… which would be a wonderful addition to my portfolio (even if the story does end up being mediocre). The best case scenario would be that I find out I actually write pretty well and someone (dare I say it?) might want to actually publish my story. The tale I’ll be working on has been taking shape in my mind for awhile now… and I look forward to sitting down to actually put it on paper this month.

Not only that, but I decided to push myself even furthur and sign up for the 12 x 12 in 2012.

I must be crazy.

That challenge will have me completing 12 complete picture book drafts this year. Wowza! I tend to work really well under pressure so I look forward to seeing what I get done. Hopefully these deadlines will get me putting pens, paper AND brushes to paper more often.

I’m having a bit of a rough week right now… despite my enthusiasm and anticipation for the new year. I am struggling a bit on which direction I should be moving with my portfolio. I took some time this morning to rifle through my old portfolios, which were gathering dust under our bed. I came across some pieces I worked on a couple years ago and decided to scan them in and add them to my website. Now… seeing the contrast between old and new that I dug up, I am second guessing my current direction a bit.

This illustration is based on a poem by Shel Silverstein titled “Captain Blackbeard Did What?” about the day he shaved his beard. I did a series in this style a few years ago (you can see more on my portfolio page) and have gotten wonderful feedback from anyone who has seen them. When I pull them out and look at them they always make me smile. However, in the past I wasn’t sure that they were colorful enough or expressive enough for children’s books. Now, seeing them side by side with my other work, I am beginning to wonder if I could find some sort of happy middle between the style and what I have been doing with my colored pencil work.

This illustration was actually a class assignment to do a book cover illustration for a classic fairy tale. I chose the Prince and the Pauper and I love the contrast between the smooth gold and the rough texture of the burlap. It was done in chalk pastels… a medium that I tend to avoid due to the mess it can make. However, I love how much movement it captured. I seem to work a lot looser in pastels… which might be something to explore a bit more this year. I also wonder if I could get achieve this (or similar) style in digital medium… something I would also like to explore a bit this year.

Most artists struggle with “their style” at least once in their career. I am definately no exception. I find that I enjoy so many different techniques and mediums that I have difficulty settling in. While this in itself is a great thing, it definately makes pulling together a “cohesive portfolio” to be a challenge.

I have a lot of thinking to do and would appreciate your opinions. Which pieces do you feel are my strongest, which are my weakest, and which direction should I go from here? Which of my styles do you feel would (if pursued) be the most marketable (don’t we hate that word) for children’s publishing? I also need to select a group of them to print for the SCBWI show in New York this month… which pieces should I include? Which ones would you leave out?
